In 1938. the design office led by Pawe³ Suchoj was tasked with developing a modern attack aircraft. The constructor presented the design of the Su-6A stormtrooper, also designated Su-6-I. The plane was a single-seat low-wing aircraft, armed with 2 20mm cannons and 2km in the wings, and 10 unguided missiles or 400 kg bombs. It was equipped with a powerful 18-cylinder M-71 radial engine with a capacity of 2000 HP. The prototype was built quickly, but problems with an underdeveloped engine delayed the start of flight tests until January 1941. The aircraft showed good performance, surpassing the competing I³-2 stormtrooper, which, however, had previously been put into mass production. In this situation, starting the production of the Su-6 was pointless. At the beginning of 1942 influenced by the experiences of the first years of the war, a decision was made to start production of a two-seater attack aircraft. Sukhoi presented the Su-6 (2A) project, sometimes designated Su-6-II, which differs from its predecessor with a redesigned cockpit housing a gunner's position, armed with UBT MG. On both sides of the cabin there were chambers for one hundred-kilogram bomb, two 250 kg bombs could be carried under the wings. The aircraft was also armed with 2 37mm 11-P-37 anti-tank guns, 2 SzKAS guns and 6 RS-82 missiles. The drive was the ASz-71F engine with a capacity of 2200KM. State trials carried out in the summer of 1943. showed good performance and maneuverability, however, the Soviet command approved the Il-2M aircraft for serial production. Most likely, it was the fact that the Il-2 had already been mass-produced before. In 1942. The USSR Commissariat of Defense placed an order for the project of a heavy stormtrooper, which could also be used as a short-range bomber. Sukhoi presented the Su-6-III project, also known as Su-6 AM-42. The aircraft was similar to the Su-6-II, the ASZ-71F radial engine was replaced with the 2000hp AM-42 inline. The prototype flew at the end of 1943, the replacement of the 11-P-37 cannons with lighter WJa cannons and the elimination of wooden elements allowed to improve the performance of the aircraft, which in this respect exceeded the competing Ilyushin airframes. Unfortunately, the 20-30 km / h lower speed at low altitudes and the 100 kg lower bomb load than the I³a-10 decided to start mass production of the Ilyushin stormtrooper. Technical data (Su-6-III version): length: 9.24 m, wingspan: 13.5 m, height: m, maximum speed: 514 km / h, rate of climb: 7.86 m / s, practical ceiling: 8100 m, range maximum: 973km.
